Herpes Treatment in Melaka

Genital and Oral Herpes Care

Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and spreads through skin to skin contact. It usually appears as clusters of small, painful blisters or shallow ulcers on the genitals, buttocks, thighs, or around the mouth. Herpes cannot be cured, but antiviral medication controls outbreaks, speeds up healing, and lowers the risk of passing the virus to a partner.

Herpes is far more common than most people realise. The World Health Organization estimates that billions of people worldwide live with HSV-1 or HSV-2, and most never know it because symptoms can be mild, mistaken for something else, or absent altogether

Our doctor at Klinik Liysha assesses, tests, and treats both genital and oral herpes in a private consultation room, with no judgement and no awkward questions from front desk staff.

Types of Herpes We Treat

Genital Herpes (HSV-2)

HSV-2 is the strain most commonly linked to genital infection. It causes recurring blisters or ulcers on the penis, vulva, vagina, buttocks, inner thighs, or anal area, and it tends to recur more frequently than HSV-1 in the same region.

Oral Herpes and Cold Sores (HSV-1)

HSV-1 typically causes cold sores on or around the lips, though it increasingly causes genital infection through oral sex. Outbreaks are often triggered by stress, illness, sun exposure, or fatigue.

First Episode Outbreak

The first outbreak is usually the most severe. It can involve multiple painful sores, fever, body aches, headache, and swollen lymph nodes in the groin, and may last two to three weeks without treatment. Starting antivirals early during this phase makes a noticeable difference to how long symptoms last.

Recurrent Outbreaks

Later outbreaks are milder, shorter, and often limited to one small patch of skin. Many patients learn to recognise a warning sensation a day or two before the sores appear, which is the ideal moment to begin medication.

Asymptomatic Shedding

The virus can be present and transmissible on the skin even when there are no visible sores. This is the main reason herpes spreads between partners who believed they were being careful, and it is also why suppressive therapy is offered to patients in ongoing relationships.

Herpes in Pregnancy

Herpes during pregnancy needs careful management, particularly if a first infection occurs in the third trimester. We assess the situation, advise on suppressive therapy near term where appropriate, and refer for obstetric co-management when needed.

Symptoms That Should Be Checked

Herpes doesn’t always look the same from one person to the next, but these are the signs worth getting checked:

  • Small fluid-filled blisters that burst and leave shallow, tender ulcers before crusting over
  • Tingling, itching, or burning in one patch of skin a day or two before sores appear
  • Pain or stinging when passing urine, often mistaken for a urinary tract infection
  • Fever, headache, body aches, and swollen glands in the groin, usually with a first outbreak
  • Small cracks, splits, or red patches that keep returning to the same spot
  • Sores on the genitals, anus, buttocks, thighs, or around the mouth

You don’t need to wait until the sores are severe. Testing is most accurate while a lesion is still fresh, so booking early gives you a clearer answer and faster relief.

Treatment Options

Herpes is highly manageable. Once we confirm the diagnosis, our doctor will recommend a plan based on how often you get outbreaks, how severe they are, and whether you have a regular partner.

Episodic Antiviral Therapy

A short course of oral antivirals such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir taken at the first sign of an outbreak. Started within 24 to 48 hours, it shortens the episode and reduces pain. This suits patients with occasional, mild recurrences.

Suppressive Antiviral Therapy

A daily low dose taken continuously to prevent outbreaks rather than react to them. It suits patients with frequent recurrences, significant discomfort, or a partner who does not have the virus.

Symptom Relief and Wound Care

Topical anaesthetic, saline soaks, loose clothing, and simple pain relief help you stay comfortable while the sores heal. We will also advise on keeping the area clean and dry to prevent secondary bacterial infection.

Partner Discussion and Prevention

We help you understand transmission risk, when to avoid sexual contact, how condoms reduce but do not eliminate risk, and how to have the conversation with a partner. Testing for other STDs is usually recommended at the same visit, since herpes rarely travels alone.

What to Expect During a Visit

Our herpes assessments are professional, respectful, and discreet at every step.

Private Consultation:
You will meet our doctor in a private consultation room. We will discuss your symptoms, how long they have been present, any previous episodes, and your sexual health history. Nothing is discussed at the counter.

Visual Examination:
If you have visible sores, blisters, or skin changes, a gentle examination of the affected area helps distinguish herpes from other causes such as fungal infection, folliculitis, shaving irritation, or syphilis.

Diagnostic Testing:
A swab taken directly from an active lesion is the most accurate test and can identify whether the infection is HSV-1 or HSV-2. If your sores have already healed, a type-specific blood test can confirm past exposure. We will explain which test is appropriate for your situation and what the results can and cannot tell you.

Once results are ready, we will explain your diagnosis clearly, start you on the right medication, and talk through what living with herpes realistically looks like. Most patients leave with a plan for both the current outbreak and future ones.

FAQ on Herpes

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The virus stays in the body permanently, but it is very manageable. Antiviral medication controls outbreaks, shortens healing time, and can reduce the risk of passing it to a partner. Many patients on suppressive therapy go long stretches with no symptoms at all.

You cannot tell reliably by looking. Ingrown hairs, fungal infections, eczema, and friction sores can look similar. A swab taken from an active sore gives a definitive answer, which is why it is worth coming in while the lesion is still present.

Symptoms typically appear between two and twelve days after exposure, though many people have such mild symptoms during the first infection that they do not notice anything at all until months or years later.

Yes. HSV-1, the strain usually associated with cold sores, can be transmitted to the genitals through oral sex. This is now a common route of genital herpes infection.

Yes. With suppressive antiviral therapy, consistent condom use, and avoiding contact during outbreaks, the risk to a partner is significantly reduced. Many couples manage this successfully for years.

Condoms lower the risk but do not remove it, because the virus can be present on skin that the condom does not cover. Combining condoms with daily antiviral therapy offers the strongest protection.

It is strongly advised. We can help you prepare for that conversation and explain the practical steps that reduce risk, which usually makes the discussion far easier than patients expect.

Yes. All consultations, examinations, and test results are kept strictly confidential and handled in a private setting.
