Jaundice Test in Melaka

Jaundice Screening

Jaundice is common in newborns, especially within the first week of life. While mild cases often clear on their own, it’s important to screen your baby early to ensure the condition doesn’t become more serious. At Klinik Liysha, we provide safe and reliable jaundice screening for babies, giving parents peace of mind during those first precious weeks.

Why Jaundice Screening Matters

Jaundice happens when there’s too much bilirubin in your baby’s blood, causing a yellowish tint to the skin and eyes. Although most cases are mild, untreated jaundice can sometimes lead to complications affecting your baby’s health and development.

Early screening allows doctors to:

  • Detect jaundice quickly and accurately
  • Monitor bilirubin levels over time
  • Decide if treatment such as phototherapy is needed
  • Prevent risks associated with severe jaundice

Screening Methods for Jaundice

Transcutaneous Bilirubinometer (TcB)

We use a non-invasive handheld device called a transcutaneous bilirubinometer. It works by shining a special light onto your baby’s skin, giving an estimate of bilirubin levels in just a few seconds. The test is completely painless and does not require needles, making it safe and comfortable for your baby.

Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB)

If bilirubin levels appear higher than normal, we may recommend a blood test to confirm the results. A small sample is taken, usually from your baby’s heel (heel prick test). Though it may cause slight discomfort for a moment, it provides the most accurate reading of bilirubin levels in the blood. This allows us to decide whether treatment such as phototherapy is necessary.

What to Expect During a Visit

We understand that parents want the safest, least stressful experience for their newborn. That’s why our jaundice screening process is designed to be gentle, accurate, and baby-friendly.

Visual Examination: Our doctors will first examine your baby’s skin and eyes for signs of yellowing. While this is not always enough to determine the severity of jaundice, it helps us decide whether further testing is needed.

Testing for Jaundice: We’ll explain the tests for TcB and TSB and perform them to confirm bilirubin levels.

In some cases, babies need repeat screenings over several days to monitor bilirubin levels. Our team will guide you on how often your baby should be checked and explain what the results mean for your child’s health.

If more advanced care is required, such as intensive phototherapy or other supportive treatments, we’ll guide your next steps like a hospital referral.

FAQ on Jaundice Screenings

Frequently Asked Questions

Jaundice happens because a baby’s liver is still developing and may not process bilirubin efficiently in the first few days of life. This causes bilirubin to build up, leading to yellowing of the skin and eyes.

If your baby’s skin or eyes appear yellow, especially within the first week after birth, screening is recommended. Premature babies, babies with bruising from birth, or those with siblings who had jaundice before are at higher risk and should be checked early.

The TcB skin test is completely painless. The TSB test may involve a small prick to the heel or a tiny blood draw, which may cause brief discomfort, but it is safe and quick.

Mild jaundice often clears on its own within 1–2 weeks. However, screening is important to ensure levels don’t rise too high, as severe jaundice can cause complications if untreated.

TcB test results are available immediately. TSB blood test results usually come back within a few hours, so treatment decisions can be made promptly.

Feeding your baby frequently helps flush bilirubin out of their system. Ensure your baby is feeding well and consult your doctor promptly if you notice increasing yellowing or lethargy.
