Ringworm Treatment in Melaka

Ringworm

Ringworm, despite its name, is not caused by a worm. It’s a common fungal skin infection that appears as a red, scaly, ring-shaped rash. It can affect the body, scalp, groin , or feet. Left untreated, it can spread and become increasingly uncomfortable. At Klinik Liysha, we provide fast, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans for any ringworm marks on your skin.

Ringworm Skin Infection

What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a contagious skin infection caused by dermatophyte fungi that thrive on skin, hair, and nails. The condition can spread through direct skin contact, contaminated items (like towels or clothes), or from pets. It often starts as a small red patch and gradually expands, forming a ring-like appearance.

Symptoms of Ringworm

Recognizing ringworm early is key to preventing it from spreading and ensuring faster recovery. Symptoms may vary depending on where the infection occurs on the body, but the most common signs include:

  • Red, circular rash with clearer skin in the middle
  • Itching, flaking, or peeling skin
  • Cracked skin between the toes or on the feet
  • Scalp scaling and hair loss patches (in scalp ringworm)
  • Thickened, discolored nails (in nail ringworm)

If you notice these symptoms, especially after contact with animals, shared spaces (like gyms), or infected individuals, it’s best to consult a dermatologist promptly.

What Ringworm on Skin Looks Like

Common types of ringworm include:

Tinea corporis (body)

A common spot for skin tags due to frequent friction from clothing, collars, or jewelry. They’re often more noticeable here, especially if they grow in clusters.

Tinea capitis (scalp)

Skin tags around the eyes can be small and interfere with blinking or vision. Because the area is sensitive, removal should be done carefully.

Tinea cruris (groin, also called jock itch)

The constant rubbing of skin and movement makes underarms a prime area for skin tags. They may also be irritated by shaving or deodorant.

Tinea pedis (feet, known as athlete’s foot)

Often seen beneath the breasts or along the bra line, especially in women. Friction from tight clothing or sweat buildup can contribute to their development.

Tinea unguium (nail infection)

Skin tags can form in the folds of the groin where skin rubs together. These may go unnoticed at first but can become uncomfortable with movement.

Treatment Options for Ringworm

Topical Antifungal Creams

For most mild cases, especially on the body, groin, or feet, topical antifungal medication is the first line of treatment. These may include Clotrimazole, Miconazole or Ketoconazole. These creams are usually applied once or twice daily for 2 to 4 weeks, even after the visible rash disappears, to ensure the fungus is completely eliminated.

Oral Antifungal Medication

If the infection is more widespread, affecting the scalp or nails, or doesn’t respond to topical treatment, your doctor may prescribe oral antifungals typically taken for a few weeks to several months, especially in cases involving scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) or nail infections, which are harder to treat.

Additional Product Recommendations

The doctor may recommend products for at home use to ease symptoms. Antifungal shampoos (e.g. selenium sulfide) can help prevent spread. Anti-itch creams or antihistamines may be used to reduce scratching and discomfort.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Assessment: We conduct a thorough visual inspection and may use skin scrapings or Wood’s lamp examination to confirm the fungal origin of your rash.

At Home Care: Additional products such as antibacterial care may be recommended if there’s secondary bacterial infection from scratching.

Post-Procedure Care: We guide you on how to prevent recurrence whether it’s personal hygiene tips, cleaning practices, or pet care instructions, to stop the infection from spreading to others.

FAQ on Ringworm Treatments

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, ringworm is highly contagious. It spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, shared clothing or towels, contaminated surfaces, or contact with infected pets.

Most mild skin infections clear up within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent treatment. Scalp or nail infections may take longer—sometimes up to 6 to 12 weeks of oral medication.

Over-the-counter antifungal creams can be effective for early or mild cases. However, if the rash doesn’t improve within a week, spreads, or affects the scalp or nails, you should seek professional treatment.

Yes, most antifungal treatments are safe for children. Dosage and type of treatment will depend on the child’s age, weight, and the severity of the infection.

Yes, reinfection is possible, especially if the source (like a pet, contaminated surface, or shared personal items) isn’t addressed. Good hygiene and completing the full course of treatment help prevent recurrence.

It’s best to avoid close contact with others until treatment has started and the area is covered. Schools and workplaces often allow return once treatment begins, but policies may vary.

Usually, ringworm heals without scarring. However, scratching, delayed treatment, or severe infections (especially on the scalp) can sometimes lead to scarring or temporary hair loss.
