Why STD Testing Matters

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), often show no symptoms. Many people can carry and transmit infections without knowing. Left untreated, STDs can lead to serious health issues like infertility, chronic pelvic pain, or complications during pregnancy. That’s why regular testing is important, even if you feel perfectly fine.

When Should You Get Tested?

You should consider getting tested if:

  • You’ve had unprotected sex
  • You’re starting a new relationship
  • You’ve had multiple partners
  • You’re experiencing unusual discharge, burning, rashes, or sores
  • You want a routine sexual health check-up

If you’re unsure, we can guide you through your options in a discreet consultation.

Common STD Test Available

HIV

A virus that weakens the immune system over time. Early detection is crucial for starting treatment and living a healthy life.

Syphilis

A bacterial infection that can cause rashes, sores, and serious complications if left untreated. It often goes unnoticed in early stages.

Hepatitis B & C

Viral infections that affect the liver. Many people don’t show symptoms until liver damage has occurred.

Chlamydia

A common bacterial STD that often causes no symptoms. If untreated, it can lead to infertility, especially in women.

Gonorrhoea

Another bacterial infection that can affect the genitals, rectum, or throat. Can lead to long-term health issues without treatment.

HPV

Some strains are harmless, but high-risk types can lead to cervical and other cancers. Testing helps identify risks early.

What to Expect During an STD Test

Blood tests are one of the most reliable ways to detect certain STDs, especially those that may not show symptoms early on. If your doctor recommends a blood test, here’s what typically happens:

After a quick check-in, a small sample of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm—usually the inside of your elbow. The process takes just a few minutes and is usually no more uncomfortable than a typical blood test. For some people, there may be mild bruising or soreness afterward, but this fades quickly.

Most results are available within a few days, depending on the test and clinic. Some rapid HIV tests can provide results in as little as 20 minutes. Tests for other STDs may require a urine test instead.
